One day, I started an AI/automation venture. Within 90 days, I had a team of eight people and had generated hundreds of thousands of dollars.
backstory
Imagine waking up and realising your entire life, every choice, every regret, was just a game. Would you be satisfied with how you played?
Rick and Morty, season 2, episode 2 has this scene where Rick and Morty play a virtual reality game called "Roy". In it, Morty lives an entire mundane life, while Rick decides to go completely rogue and take control, making bold choices that shape Roy's story dramatically.
Watching this scene, my first thought was, "Who would seriously play it safe in a game like this?"
But a few days later, as I sat at my desk staring at my screen, coffee getting cold beside me, it hit me - we're already playing this game, and unfortunately, most of us are Morty.
the game
Life resembles Roy more than I'd initially thought. We go through the motions, following society's playbook: school, work, marriage, retirement. It's comfortable and predictable.
Unlike Roy, there isn't a reset button for life. We've got just one round, yet we put off our dreams, our passions, convincing ourselves there'll be another chance later, another time.
Sure, games have built-in safety nets, so if you mess up, you respawn. Real life feels scarier, like it's missing those safeguards. But the more I thought about it, the clearer it became, most risks aren't as permanent or catastrophic as we make them out to be.
playing in creative mode
Around the time I saw that episode, I had a deep conversation with one of my best mates about purpose and motivation. With the usual philosophical banter, he dropped something that confused me: "Bro, we live in creative mode."
At first, it sounded absurd. Obviously, we can't spawn objects, teleport across cities, or fly around effortlessly.
However, think about it - in creative mode, the rules loosen up and you're free to build, experiment, and explore without fear. It's exactly how we should approach life, yet rarely do, as we limit ourselves with imagined barriers, societal expectations, and unfounded fears.
I truly believe if you put your mind to something, you can achieve it. Cristiano Ronaldo went from a street sweeper to one of the best footballers in the world. Jeff Bezos went from a garage-based bookstore to one of the richest people in the world. They were Rick - they live in creative mode.
taking control
Realising this shifted my entire perspective. It made me rethink my decisions, my habits, and even my ambitions. I had big dreams but my actions were sabotaging my life.
That month I started an AI/automation venture, and just busted my ass to make it work.
my thoughts
I am nowhere near where I want to be, but I'd like to think I'm on the right track.
Despite being at the start of my journey, I'm already seeing the results of my actions, so one thing I can say is if you believe in yourself with undoubted confidence, and back your actions with conviction, I guarantee you will not lose.
Just don't be a Morty.
